During the COVID-19 pandemic, I worked with the Lion Clubs of NRI Diamonds in the Navi Mumbai Dharavi region, mapping areas of dire need and coordinating dry ration drives for vulnerable families in informal settlements. Packing and distributing essential supplies to families who had lost their livelihoods overnight was one of the most grounding experiences of my life. It was here that I truly understood how informal networks and local trust structures operate in crisis conditions and how community action, when combined with on-ground mapping, can reach where institutions often cannot.
